Hello, my name is George Hatchell, Jr. and I am working on resurrecting the Hatchell Genealogy web site.  I live in Richmond VA and have a lot of local research I will be adding, as well as years from work from my father.

I invite others to join me in contributing to this web site.  A lot of new materials are becoming available as the Library of Virginia scans old records.  I will also be posting a searchable index that contributors have helped develop over the years.

Now on to the old and new web site:

The parts of this web site:

Name Origin Is a short piece written by Bill Hatchell and updated 2/19/02. It describes the earliest occurrence of the name, it’s origins and variations. Bill Hatchell is largely responsible for getting this page started.

The Contributors page shows just a few of the people who have contributed the material found in the reports here. There’s also a short bio for most contributors.

The Artifacts section has two photos of tools used for working with flax. The Hatchell surname evolved from its association with these tools and the process used to produce linen from flax (see Name Origin).

Personal information/Privacy:

The genealogy reports here no longer show information about living people (after 1900); information now appears only as “Private” Male or Female. All email links are plain text.

No information has been removed from any of our Main Databases — nothing has been deleted and new data is being compiled all the time — the privacy format applies only to what is shown about LIVING PERSONS on this web site. If you are a legitimate Hatchell (or related-family) researcher and would like a copy (gedcom) of your line showing names that aren’t displayed here, please send me an email request.

Surnames indexes Each of the reports in the Genealogies section has it’s own Names and Surnames Indexes. To find an index of surnames, go to the Genealogies section and click on any family report shown there. When the report opens, click the Surnames lists. Be sure to check the surnames list in each of the other reports as they are all separate. There is no main index listing all the surnames on this site so you will have to search through each report.

Submitting information to this Database. The main genealogical database information from which this page is built comes from William O’Donald “Bill” Hatchell in New Mexico. You may submit your info to George@SCOUTLIFE.US

Focus This page has no one person or single Hatchell family as it’s reference point. There are several, separate, Hatchell lineages shown here, and each of these lines contains it’s own related-family information.

The Hatchell Window and other Research item links are here.

Ferguson family researchers may be interested to know that Richard Ferguson has written a book titled:

Genealogy of Ferguson and Kindred Families.

Richard Ferguson says Since the Hatchells play a fairly important role in a critical time for proving the relationships of Elijah Ferguson, I have included a descendant chart of William Hatchell of Ireland that goes down to the Fergusons. There are pictures of some of the early Fergusons: James Harvey, Mary Louisa, William Jasper, and Andrew Jackson among others. The book is about 310 pages, with copies of wills and marriage documents, and a number of related lines, including some royal lines. According to the author, his book contains quite a lot of information on the William Hatchell lineage. The book price is $55.00. Contact Richard at runner@wtez.net for more information.

(Note: Descendants of William Hatchell (1786-1859) and Mary “Polly” Lee (1791-1859) of SC are allied with the Ferguson family of East Feliciana Parish, LA and Drew County, AR. Mary Ann Hatchell, daughter of William Hatchell and Mary “Polly” Lee married Joseph W. Ferguson 30 Apr 1833 in East Feliciana Parish. William Hatchell was son of Morris Hatchell and Martha “Patty” Arrington of Old Darlington District, SC.). Bill Hatchell.
